This is a two color linoleum block print. Inspired by the Black Panther Party. Reprinted onto a fine rice paper. White paper with green – gray ink. It says, “We want housing, land, bread, clothing, education, justice, and peace.” Taken from an excerpt from the Black Panther Party “What we want, what we believe”. This is a six color reduction and multiple block linoleum print. A woman weaves and transforms a material from a deep red into an earthy green knit. In the back ground is a crumbling city. This print is about rebuilding and beginning again when things fall apart. Right now the education system, the financial system, and pretty much every system in the US is in dire shape and many young people aren’t getting the knowledge, attention, resources, and opportunities they need to grow. This print is about starting over, beginning again. We spend more money on the military than we do on our schools.  Plus, for the amount our country spends on housing prisoners, we could be sending everyone to private school instead.  When I was making this print I was inspired by a Durruti quote about holding a new world in our hearts.  This print is 12″ x 12″. This is a four color reduction linoleum block print.  Tierra y Libertad is Spanish meaning Land and Liberty.    The fight for land is also a fight for self determination.  In a society where land is not a communal resource, those who own land control those without.  In this print, I wanted to highlight a woman marching through the city feeling free and at peace.  Through the use of her marching I wanted to play with the idea that all land should belong to all people, so liberty and land should be about more than just private ownership over a parcel of land. The phrase Land and Liberty has been used by anarchists in several movements.  It was originally used in the 1870’s in Russia (the Russian phrase is Земля и воля).  In Russia, this group was a clandestine revolutionary movement which worked to spread socialist ideals within rural areas.  Their idea was for communities to have equal distribution of land and be self governing through communalism.  Later it was use by leaders in the Mexican Revolution.  In Mexico land had been taken from the native population through dubious means and peasants were at the mercy of landowners for their subsistence.   The slogan was also used during the Spanish Civil War.  The edition of this image is out of print.

 

When I made this print I was thinking a lot about sustainability and natural power. I was thinking of energizer bunnies, the power we have within ourselves, and one of the first stencils I made of a sneaky rabbit with the heading “sneaky and quick does the trick.”  10 color print, 9″ x 12 1/4″, signed/numbered edition of 53.
